Torie’s First Moon Party

We had the beautiful opportunity to celebrate Torie’s rise to womanhood last weekend.  Mothers and daughters and friends.  Torie made sure some of our adult girlfriends that are boy-only-moms were invited, since they wouldn’t have the opportunity in their own lives to throw such a fun celebration.

Here is what we did, and a few suggestions for things we planned to do but never got around to doing.

1. A red tent.

This was Torie’s idea.  And it was raining outside, so we set up our camping tent in the front room, and made a cozy pillow nest inside.

2. Red and pink food.

We ended up with dinner party timing, so we made salmon (it’s pink!) and spinach salads with pomegranate seeds, and berries and grapes and cheese and plums and chocolate, because we like all of that stuff.

3. A girls’ circle.

I planned on something more formal, with mother-daughter sharing and reading passages from Reaching for the Moon and Rebel Girls, but the girls got ahead of me here while I was setting out the food.  Instead they made a rose petal, rose quartz, and foraged twig mandala with a candle at the center.  I sent the young burning women outside to the fire pit when they started lighting the twigs to char the edges and they ended up building a proper fire in the fire pit out back, so it was a success for sure.

4. A craft.

We never got to this but if it were a more introverted bunch, I would still recommend it.  We were planning to make braided friendship bracelets with sterling silver moon charms.  We decided we’ll save them for the next moon party. (We’re predicting several over the next year.)

5. A moon cake.

(Let it be known that I initially suggested a uterus cake with cupcake ovaries 😂, but Tor overruled me.) We made a chocolate cake with melted chocolate for icing, and cut chocolate sandwich cookies into the moon phases.  Tasty and beautiful.

6. Moon mamas/sisters.

This was possibly my favorite part for Tor.  She felt loved and supported and received the sweetest notes and cards and small gifts.  All the girls (and mamas) are looking forward to the next one.  The morning after, Tor came to me and said it was the best party she’s ever had.
